Disinfection by-products (DBPs) form in the pool water when chlorine reacts with different substances stemming from bathers, such as skin cells, hair, sweat, urine, soap, or sunscreen, etc. As certain by-products are volatile, they are transported from the polluted water to the pool atmosphere. A dangerous volatile substances is Trihalomethanes (THMs), which is responsible for causing cancer. Another one is trichloramine, which has a strong irritating effect on humans causing eye irritation and respiratory problems in the form of asthma.

However, a healthier swimming environment can be created by predicting Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) and THM levels and dynamics in the water based on water quality modeling to assess the design of the swimming pools. With the inBlue pool model it is possible to calculate key water and air quality parameters like combined chlorine, THM, trichloramine and turbidity depending on the choice of key design parameters, such as flow and filtration technology.

This provides a powerful tool for the management of the indoor conditions, contributing to improved water and air quality and a better user experience for the bathers.

Deliverables

  • Water chemistry simulations – parameters taken into account are surface area, water volume and temperature, air temperature and humidity, chlorine concentration, pool pH, daily bather load, opening hours, daily water exchange.
  • Water quality model for THM, CC and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)
  • Calculations of the evaporation from pool surfaces
  • Accurate technical reports for each projects

Benefits

  • Customized solution with different simulation scenarios
  • Accurate water quality predictions
  • Identification of best suited water treatment technology
  • Correct sizing of water treatment technology
  • Prediction of system responds to changes, for example, bather load or freshwater intake

Process of modeling

  1. Key pool design parameters integrated in the inBlue model tool.
  2. The results of water chemistry simulation delivered in a final report.
